In the five years following the calamity, Sayo had been working in a band of street performers. he turned to mercenary work to help get more omeny for one of his old troup friends, and met the scions when he selflessly fought Ifrit, sure that he was doomed and would be tempered. He has no real memories from before Dalamud crashed, just vague ideas: he knows he had a mother, and a few sisters, but not where they were or who they are.
Sayo's echo gives him a strange sixth sense to tell when people are trustworthy or not, which makes him come off as naive to people who don't know him. He can tell when someone is lying for a good reason, or when someone means him harm-- this leads him to seemingly accepting lies, but its only because he knows the end will justify the means.
Sayo is uncomfortable with any fame, and he gets less and less happy about his newfound renoun-- he only joins with the scions because he truly wants to help, and since he has the echo he feels its his duty to help people who need it. He's disgusted by any implication that he's fighting for fame or money, and being framed in Uldah almost makes him quit entirely. He enjoys traveling and seeing new places and meeting new people, and he tries his hardest to see the best in every horrible situation.
Sayo's azem was named Ariadne, and despite looking nothing alike they are incredibly similar personality-wise. Both are friendly and optimistic, and would do anything for people they consider friends. The biggest difference between them is that Ariadne loved all things insect and creepy: she's responsibly for Graffias, the deepeyes, and many of the spider-like vilekin. Sayo on the other hand can't stand bugs, and is scared to death of spiders.
